The petition in support of 1A Santa Fe’s proposed Free Expression and Public Assembly ordinance now has close to one hundred signers. New subscribers to this newsletter can read about the legal background to the ordinance here. We are continuing to gather signatures. If you know possible signers in the area - especially in the City of Santa Fe or the County of Santa Fe - please share this link and ask them to show their support by signing.

We’ve been told by Mayor Mike Garcia that he is working on a proposal regarding permits and/or other requirements for planned political demonstrations to bring to the City Council. This has been confirmed by a City Councilor.

We want Mayor Garcia and the Council to take into account the proposed Free Expression and Public Assembly ordinance as early in their deliberations as possible. Thanks to a helpful intermediary, we learned very recently that Mayor Garcia was open to a meeting with 1A Santa Fe founder Heidi Li Feldman. That’s now scheduled for June 9, 2026.

Heidi also plans to attend two upcoming meetings of the Santa Fe City government meetings. Both of these meetings are open to the public. If you would like to join Heidi at either one please do!

  • 🗓️ On April 22, the Quality of Life Legislative Committee meets at 5:00 PM at Council Chambers, City Hall, 200 Lincoln Avenue. This subcommittee of the City Council is one of three where City ordinances can be introduced. All ordinances originate in a legislative committee. Heidi will try to speak during the public comment period to introduce the draft Free Expression and Public Assembly Ordinance and provide copies to the committee members.

  • 🗓️ On April 29, the Governing Body — the entire City Council and the Mayor — meets at 5:00 PM at Council Chambers, City Hall, 200 Lincoln Avenue. Depending on whether Heidi gets to speak at the April 22 meeting and on any guidance she receives, she may also attend the April 29 to bring the ordinance to the attention of full Governing Body.

If you live in the City of Santa Fe, consider contacting your City Councilors to tell them you would like them to adopt the proposed Free Expression and Public Assembly ordinance. If you need to refresh your memory as to who your Councilors are, check this map of the Council Districts.
