On Wednesday, March 18 at around 11 am, 1A Santa Fe founder Heidi Li Feldman received the following email from the City Manager of Santa Fe:
Good morning, Ms. Feldman,
In the interest of public safety, and in the context of the expectedly large No Kings, 1A and other gatherings planned for March 28, 2026, the City of Santa Fe will proactively close Old Santa Fe Trail to vehicular traffic from the State Capitol Roundhouse to the Santa Fe Plaza. This will allow for a march, procession or other pedestrian activity that excludes motor vehicles at the time planned for political rallies. At this time a permit will not be needed to request a road closure. By closing the road to motor vehicles, the City will facilitate the protection of First Amendment rights. Thank you for your cooperation.
Brian J Moya/ City of Santa Fe
Interim City Manager
Heidi wrote on Bluesky: “This is great for March 28, when I will be in the streets of #SantaFe to say no government in America is above the law. I’ll be demonstrating my opposition to the lawless Trump regime and all its fascist doings.”
But, the City’s discretionary choice to close streets for one occasion doesn’t solve the larger problem: the City of Santa Fe still lacks policy and practice for constitutionally issuing permits for peaceful assembly for political speech. Until 3/28 and, if needed, beyond, 1A Santa Fe and Heidi will be working to have the City of Santa Fe bring its street use permit policies and practices in line with what the New Mexico and United States constitutions require.
